A barber
for the long
haul.

A traditional neighborhood barbershop on Belmont Avenue — same chairs, same standards, since 1959.

A barber at Andre's combs and trims a customer's hair.

Three owners.
One chair.

The Andre's Barber Shop storefront window, painted in classic black serif lettering.

A neighborhood
shop, traditional in
every sense.

Andre Youmara, a French immigrant, bought the shop in 1959 from its previous owner and ran it for half a century. In 2011, the chair passed to Kirk Merchant — a second-generation barber and only the third owner in the shop's history.

Andre's isn't a gimmick or a historical reenactment. It's an authentic, contemporary incarnation of an age-old institution. We have a deep respect for the craft. We also know that, at the end of the day, we're just cutting people's hair.

Inside the shop.

Six chairs. A wall of mirrors. Magazines stacked in the corner. Hand-painted lettering in the window. A barber pole that still spins.

At the end of the day, we're just cutting people's hair.
